M's 20 Month Update

My sweet little Matthew will be 2 in less than 4 months - where has the time gone???  The past 2 months have gone by so quickly and he is learning so much.  It seems like in the last 2 weeks, he has just started learning at least one new thing every day.  Especially new words.  He is to the point where he will not stop talking - it's adorable and hilarious!  He has done so very well with this new transition since Samuel was born.  He spends his days at daycare, which he loves.  On the weekends, we go as a family to see Samuel and Matthew gets to play on the playground.  He already loves his brother and will go to his pictures around the house and say "Bro" - melts my heart!  Here are a few highlights for my 20 month old:

~ You are still wearing size 3 diapers.  They still fit and it's an easy way save money!
~ You are wearing 18-24 month clothes.  Most of the 18-24 month pants are a little long still, but you'll grow into them.  It'll be a while before you can wear 24 month or 2T clothing.

~ You still love books!  You'll look through and pick out your favorites for us to read.  You've even started "reading" more on your own.

~ You're talking up a storm.  If your not squealing and laughing, you're talking to mommy and daddy about important things.  Some new words for you are eat "ea ea", milk "mi-eh", Bella, goggles, Bro "beau", book "boop", bump, bridge, wheel, big rig "bb", bus, Elmo, bowl.  I'm sure there's more, but that's all I can think of right now.  We are working so hard on building your vocabulary.

~ You started 2 adorable games while we're in the car.  The first one is whenever we go over a bump, we raise our hands and say "BUMP"!  The second one is whenever we drive under a bridge, we have to duck.  It's hilarious watching you duck in your carseat as we get closer and closer to the bridge.

~ Your favorite toy right now is any kind of ball.  You love throwing, bouncing, kicking, rolling, anything you can think of.

~ You're almost done with teething!  You're getting your last canine tooth and then all that's left is your 2 year molars.

~ You love to help mommy and daddy around the house.  You can help with the laundry, picking up clothes, using daddy's tools, vacuuming, mopping, dusting, etc.  I know this won't last, so we are enjoying this now.

1 Month

My sweet Samuel is now 1 month old - how is that possible???  There are days that it seems like he was born months ago, and other days that seem like he was born yesterday.  This has been not only a roller coaster, but an extreme roller coaster.  Instead of focusing on all of the downs of this ride, I want to share the ups from Samuel's first month.

Yes, I had to do the tie stickers just like big bro Matthew :-)

~ You opened your eyes for the first time on Easter Sunday.  What a great day to see the world for the first time.  This was an exciting milestone because this is one that is missed since their little eyes aren't fuzed at birth.

~ I got to hold you for the first time when you were 2 weeks old.  It was the best 30ish minutes!!!  Since you were constantly covered up, I rarely got to see how truly small you were.  When the nurse took you out of your bed to lay on my chest, I was amazed at how small you really were.  They placed you with your little face looking at mine.  You opened your eyes and watched me for the first several minutes, and then relaxed and fell asleep in your mommy's arms.  Such a precious moment!

~ Your daddy got to hold you later that week.  He was so excited because he was jealous when I held you.  I sat and watched the two of you relax and rest for 45 minutes.  It made my heart so very happy.  It made me look forward to seeing all 3 of my boys relaxing at home :-)

~ I was able to change your diaper and take your temperature for the first time when you were a week old.  After that, I became a champ at both!  You cracked me up each time I'd wipe your little bottom because you were able to clinch your little buns together.  Most precious thing ever!

~ You grabbed my finger and your daddy's finger for the first time on May 6th.  This made me cry because of how much I long to be able to hold and snuggle with you away from all of your tubes, ivs, and giraffe bed.

~ You are a feisty and strong little guy!  The doctors and nurses were able to see this very soon.  You are proving that you are such a fighter.  Any time you surprise us, I simply smile and think, "That's Samuel".  I already love your personality!

~ You are a miracle!  After being transported to ACH this week, things went down hill.  Your daddy and I thought we were going to lose you on Wednesday.  Come Thursday morning, you showed us just what a fighter you are.  In a matter of 6 hours, you were a completely different baby.  I am still brought to tears when I think of the strength that God has given you.

I am beyond thankful for you, Samuel.  You have taught me more than anyone else and have brought me closer to God than I have been in a while.  You are changing lives while you're fighting for your own.  I absolutely can't wait to see what God has planned for you.  You are my little miracle and I love you with all of my heart!

Samuel James Fleisher

Where do I even begin?  We welcomed our precious baby boy, Samuel James, on Monday at 4:49 am.  He was 24 weeks and 4 days old, so he was 16 weeks early.  He weighed 1 lb 15 oz and was 12.5 inches long.  The last 5 days have been a complete whirlwind while we struggle to understand why this happened and how to watch our baby boy continue to grow in the NICU.  We are trying to learn our "new normal" as we pray for and visit Samuel.  He has proven that he is a fighter and truly is a little miracle.  It is still unbelievable to me that I am no longer pregnant, and that I now have to watch my baby grow while attached to lots of tubes.  When you add hormones on top of all of that, my days have been SO up and down.  I know that the Lord is taking us through this journey for a reason and I know that His plan is so much better than I could ever imagine.  It's amazing how much your priorities change in a matter of hours.  Here's a snapshot of how quickly everything happened.

I began spotting on Sunday around dinner time.  I contacted my gynocologist as it continued and she just said to monitor it and call the on-call doctor if it got worse.  As the night went on, I began noticing cramping.  I stayed on the couch all evening hoping it would help everything stop.  Once I got into bed, the cramping became more rhythmic and were 2-4 minutes apart for about 40 minutes.  I decided to call to see what the on-call doctor wanted me to do.  When I listed off my symptoms, the on-call doctor suggested I go on to the hospital since I was on 24 weeks.  This was at about 11:00 Sunday night.

Once my sister got to the house to be with Matthew, Mike and I headed to the hospital.  At this point, the bleeding had increased and I was hysterical.  They put us in a triage room and hooked me up to all of the monitors.  Once I heard Samuel's heartbeat, I was more at ease.  They did not think I was having contractions based on what they were picking up on the monitor.  After a while, the cramping went away.  Mike and I stayed in our triage room for a few hours while they monitored everything.  My sweet parents stayed in the waiting room.  In order to rule out a few things, they had to put in a catheter to make sure the bleeding wasn't from my bladder.  Then, they put in an iv of fluids in case I was dehydrated.  After this, my parents were able to come back to sit with us.  It was during this time, probably around 3 am, that I began having cramps again.  However, this time I could tell they were different.  As they continued, my mom started timing them and they were 2 minutes apart.  At this time, the nurse could tell that I was having contractions based on what the monitor was picking up, so she called to update the on-call doctor.

After the update, the Dr. H came in to check me out.  When he did, he said he could not tell how dilated I was due to my water sack bulging so much.  He then prepared us for everything that could happen.  I could take the meds to stop labor, but stay in the antepartum unit until baby arrives.  My water could break, and I would stay in the antepartum until until baby arrives.  My water could break and I would have the baby.  He also asked if I'd discussed the possibility of having a VBAC since I had a c-section with Matthew.  I told him it was on the agenda for my next prenatal appointment.  Because of that, he did an ultrasound to make sure baby was head down in case things went quickly, and he was.

Before I knew it, Mike and I were being put into a labor and delivery room just in case.  I'd already been given the meds to help stop labor and I was praying that they'd work.  By the time we got into our L & D room, about 4:20 am, things went so fast.  I had to sign many forms and talk to a NICU nurse so we'd know what would happen if I were to have him.  I had about 5 contractions during all of this and was having the urge to push.  Then, the next 2 contractions were very mild and tolerable.  My thought was that the medicine was working.  Well, on the next, very painful contraction, my water broke.  Right then, things began to spin and I was in a fog.  I told Mike my water broke, and he relayed the message to the nurses.  I remember the nurses yelling that my water had broken and to get the doctor and NICU in the room.  A nurse checked me immediately, and said I was "good to go".  My response, "What does that mean"?  She told me that I was 10 cm and that the baby's head was right there.  A huge feeling of terror came over me.  By this point, the doctor and 10 other people had come into the room.  I had to wait through one contraction, and thankfully a nurse put her face in mine to help me focus.  I know I had a look of terror on my face.

It took 2 contractions and 5 pushes to get Samuel out.  He let out 2 little cries (something that didn't even cross my mind to listen for) and was taken quickly to the NICU team.  I only saw the top of his head.  I tried to get a glimpse of him while the doctor was finishing up, but there were too many nurses around him.  It wasn't long before they took him to the NICU unit and Mike and I were left wondering what had just happened.  We called our parents and began spreading the word & asking for prayers.  Dr. S, one of the neonatologists, came to visit with Mike and I around 6:45 am.  He prepared us for what we would see when we first saw Samuel - what all of the tubes were and how they were helping Samuel.  He also went over what to expect during the first week.  I broke down when he started explaining possible complications with being born so early.  While we know there is a chance for complications, and we needed to know ahead of time, we have faith that the Lord will keep our Samuel healthy.  The doctor basically told us to strap on our seatbelts because we are going to feel like we are on a rollercoaster.

Mike and I first got to see Samuel around 7:30 am.  It is so hard to explain the emotion when seeing your baby hooked up to so many monitors for the first time.  Trying to process everything that had happened in the course of 5 hours was emotionally draining.  The rest of Monday was spent calling the NICU often for updates, getting hugs/prayers/cards/flowers/food from a multitude of visitors, crying, trying to sleep, and having Mike push me in a wheelchair to see our Samuel.  It was overwhelming to feel the amount of love & support that came from family and friends in just 1 day.  I know the Lord has heard (and is still listening) to every prayer that is being lifted up for Samuel.  I stayed in the hospital until Wednesday afternoon so I could be as close to Samuel as possible.  I had been told how hard it is to leave the hospital after giving birth and having to leave your baby there, but you just can't prepare for it.  As the day went on, I got more and more emotional.  I began to panic inside as the hour we were to leave got closer.  As Mike and I went to say goodbye to Samuel before leaving, I broke down before getting to NICU (I'm crying just thinking about it).  Leaving him felt like leaving a very big piece of my heart behind.  I know he is in good hands, but I would give anything to be able to stay with him constantly.  I am thankful that we are only 20 minutes away from the hospital.  Some moms have to drive hours just to see their baby.

Right now, I'm trying to see Samuel at least 3 times a day and I call the NICU in between visits (even at 3 am).  My plan is to start spending a few hours at a time at the hospital so I can see him more often.  A family friend of ours who recently went through something similar with her grandbabies said that this would be a "journey".  She was so accurate!  I can only imagine what the rest of the journey will bring, but I know that at the end of this journey God's name will be glorified.  This is all a part of His plan, and I know in my heart that He has amazing things planned for Samuel.  While I visit Samuel I make sure to pray over him and just thank God for our little miracle.  I found this quote and it just fits perfectly, "a little bit of heaven sent down to earth so you can see a miracle in the making".  Watching as Samuel kicks and moves around, seeing his perfectly formed body, counting all 10 fingers and toes with finger nails, noticing his dark hair, smiling as he breaths in and out just proves that he is a miracle.

I will do my best to continue to update about Samuel, but I will also continue updating about our family.  We are talking with Matthew often and showing him pictures of his brother to help prepare him for when he gets to see Samuel for the first time.  I am so in love with the 3 boys that God has put in my like - Mike, Matthew, and Samuel!  What a blessed woman I am!

For this child I prayed, and the Lord answered my prayer.  1 Samuel 1:27

24 Weeks

Alrighty, I'm back on track!  Here we are at 24 weeks - how did we get this far along so quickly???  We only have 16 weeks to go!  We went for our 24 week appointment yesterday and Baby Boy's heartbeat was still strong and still around 140.  They also started measuring my belly, and all is well there.  While there, I got to take the loverly glucola test.  The drink still wasn't terrible, however, I didn't pass this time :-(  I passed with Matthew, so this was new territory for me.  My level needed to be below 140 and it was 147 - so close!  I have to go back on the 14th for the 3 hour test where I drink an even stronger drink and get pricked every hour.  If I don't pass 3 out of the 4, then I guess we'll have to discuss gestational diabetes - I'm a little terrified to be honest.  I'm hoping that since my level wasn't too much over, I can pass the next test.  Prayers are very much appreciated!

Either Mike's angle was a little different or my stomach has gotten big enough to block my legs

23 Weeks

And, I've successfully gotten behind on posting.  I've been trying for every 2 weeks, but was too busy packing for Florida last week.  That being said, I'm moving on to 23 weeks, and will resume next week.

Baby's size: a large mango - baby is about 11 inches long (head to heel) and you weigh just over a pound.

Best moment this week: spending time with family in Florida and making memories with Matthew!
Miss anything: sleeping on my stomach - it's my go-to for comfort
Movement: Little Man has been kicking like crazy, and the kicks/elbows are getting bigger every day!  It's gotten to the point where I can feel the kicks from the outside, but Mike is still waiting to feel them.
Food cravings: meat or just junk food (terrible) - I've heard that's a sign of a boy when you eat like a growing teenage boy.  It's definitely gotten to that point (and the point where I never feel full).

Gender:  it's a BOY!!  Still working on a name for Little Man.

20 Weeks

We have made it to the half way point!!!  The countdown is officially on!!!  This week has been a whirlwind of emotions - family friends in the hospital, a death in the family, and finding out the gender of this precious baby.  While there have been a lot of downs this week, the major high point was finding out that we are expecting a baby BOY!!!  I'm now 2-0 on guessing the gender, but who's keeping count (ME!).  I was able to take the whole day off so I could relax and prepare for the gender reveal that night.  We had to wait for 30 extra minutes to get an ultrasound because the clinic had been closed 2 days previous due to major winter weather.  I absolutely adore the ultrasound tech at my clinic!  She always remembers me because we have little ones that are 1 month apart.

I went in guessing boy, but had been going back and forth this whole time.  I really didn't have a preference, so when I hear/saw the heartbeat everything else went out the window.  All I cared about was a healthy baby, and praise the Lord, that's what we've got!  As she looked for the gender, she paused on a blurry image and said, "Looks like you're having another boy"!  Mike and I had to have her point out what she was seeing, which was completely different from Matthew's ultrasound.  This little boy was in a funky position and wouldn't keep still (does this mean we're gonna have our hands full with baby #2???).  She found several different angles to prove to Mike that she was 100% sure it was a boy.  Needless to day, we are beyond thrilled to have another little boy, and for Matthew to have a little brother!

How far along: 20 weeks
Baby's size: a banana - baby is about 6.5 inches long (head to rump) and about 10 inches (head to heel).  You weigh about 10.5 oz
Maternity clothes: sometimes
Sleep: it's been much better.  I still, occasionally, waking up from hip pain.
Best moment this week: Seeing little bit again (and for the last time before delivery) and knowing that he is healthy!
Miss anything: sleeping on my stomach and being able to make it without a nap
Movement: been feeling lots of little kicks!
Food cravings: been craving sweets like crazy
Anything making you queasy or sick: nothing specific
Gender:  it's a BOY!!
Labor signs: nope
Symptoms: siatica (on a daily basis - boo!), and heart burn
Belly button in or out: in, but I can tell it's moving out.  I'll be shocked if it pops out because it never did with Matthew
Wedding rings on or off: on
Happy or moody most of the time: very up and down with the week we've had - there have been lots of tears and anxious moments
Looking forward to: Figuring out a name for this little boy and really starting to work on M's big boy room!

Here's to the next 20 weeks!
